Get The Designer Look – Chanel
Not every fashionista has the budget for a closet full of designer clothing, but even on a tight budget you can achieve a similar luxury look by finding key pieces that epitomize these designer labels. I am all about splurging on designer pieces when you can, but if that is not a possibility, it is rather simple to recreate designer looks by studying the brand and paying attention to what items seem to characterize that brand.
One of the designer labels I can only dream of having a abundance of in my closet is Chanel. To me, this brand symbolizes chic, sophistication, and luxury, but with items costing thousands of dollars apiece, it is not very budget friendly. Luckily for us, the key items of this brand are continually replicated and available in budget friendly stores everywhere. Some of the key items of this brand include: the tweed jacket, layered strings of pearls, and of course, the quilted purse with chain link straps.
The Tweed Jacket
The important thing to do when looking for a tweed jacket is to pay attention to details. Chanel would never produce a jacket with cheap buttons, plastic zippers, or improperly placed seams, so avoid finds that have any of these issue. Keep your eye out for a jacket that has expensive looking details such as beaded edges, frayed edging along the sleeves and bottom hem, zippered or slit sleeves, and well-placed pockets. Fit is also important, make sure the jacket hits at the hip and fits you well through the arms and shoulders. The jacket should look tailored for your body and if it doesn’t take it to a tailor and get it altered (tailors charge next to nothing to alter clothing).
Layered Strings of Pearls
When looking to recreate this Chanel jewelry staple, make sure you get varying lengths of pearl like bead strands that hit from the waist up (if you can purchase or have inherited real pearls, by all means wear them!!!). You can also play around with the size of the pearl to add some contrast and interest. Avoid anything that looks too much like a costume piece or is obviously made of plastic.
The Quilted Purse
In terms of the quilted purse, size does not matter. If you like to carry a bigger purse go for a large quilted tote, if you like them small, go for a crossbody style, Chanel bags range in size across the board. The key to this is a purse with a metal chain link strap and a full quilted body (a quilted pattern in the front with a smooth back screams imposter). I recommend avoiding anything with zippers, which tend to look cheap on budget friendly purses.
